Super-group alert! If you have never heard of Salvador Dali Parton, I’ll cut you some slack considering the band only came together a week ago, but they’re one group you’re going to want to know about.  Made up of Mumford and Sons’ Winston Marshall, Old Crow Medicine Show’s Gil Landry,  Jake Orrall of Jeff the Brotherhood, Mike Harris of Apache Relay, and fronted by Justin Hayward-Young of The Vaccines, Salvador Dali Parton’s existence in the music world was short-lived but oh so sweet.  After a 20-minute songwriting session, one day of practice, a fair amount of whiskey, and a night of six shows, Salvador Dali Parton disbanded early Sunday morning.

Considering the collection of artists who made up this group, no one could have predicted that they’d deliver a mix of emo punk and doom metal, made even better by Marshall’s appearance in a dress, fishnet stockings, a fur coat, and a platinum blonde wig to complete the bizarre look.  As soon as the show began, a robed Hayward-Young turned into a man on a mission: to deliver as many death stares and theatrically foreboding hand gestures as possible.  Their set-list consisted of mostly impromptu instrumentals but with only one practice session together, they managed to pull off a very entertaining show.  Much to my and the rest of the audience’s enjoyment, Marshall and Hayward-Young were both very involved with the audience throughout the show I attended at the Exit/In.  At one point, a slightly inebriated Marshall invited an audience member on stage for a slow dance.

Despite having lasted just a little over half an hour, I can easily say that Salvador Dali Parton delivered one of the most entertaining and memorable shows I’ve seen.  Even after seeing them perform, I’m not entirely sure what their sound is; I only know that it’s a good one.

The Rickshaw Roadshow is a five-piece outfit from the Johnson City, Tennessee area.  The band employs the use of wide range of instruments to create a folksy rock and roll sound with a hint of blues.  The perfect musical lovechild of The Avett Brothers and The Black Keys, The Rickshaw Roadshow is not just your run of the mill garage band; these guys are serious about their craft and have been building their own unique sound for years..  With no member tied down to exclusively play any one instrument, the amount of instrument swapping that occurs during each show is more than enough to keep the audience engrossed in the performance.  Having delved into music at relatively young ages, each of the five members of The Rickshaw Roadshow uses their musical and lyrical experience to craft unique, original tracks that are easy to appreciate.

The band’s debut album was released in February of this year.  Two new members have been added since the album hit the streets.  Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Austin Barrett shared that the band has “a slew of new songs” and that their sound has become “much more complex but has solidified at the same time”.  Barrett also offered, “We like to think of our first CD as a collective of ideas of all of our writing styles. As we all spend more time together and collect more experiences, however, we start to come up with exactly the same ideas”.

The Rickshaw Roadshow is in the studio right now tracking for their second album.  Barrett says the band is “very excited for where the sound is going.”  I’m sure the fans are just as anxious to get their hands and ears on those new tracks too.

The month of October has proven to be a busy month for new music releases.  With many of my personal favorite bands putting out new tunes, I’ve been more excited about the coming of fall than usual.  Among the many artists that have recently released new projects is the Nashville-based alternative folk rock band Prince of Spain, formerly known as The Scene Aesthetic.  His Majesty, the first of hopefully many projects to come from Prince of Spain, is a full length album that has the familiar feel of groups like Ivan & Alyosha or Fleet Foxes in its harmonic melody and lighthearted sound yet is still quite unique to the music scene.

Frontman Andrew De Torres shared, “For the last 2 years we’ve been working on a collection of songs and ultimately felt like they deserved to be given a new name. Many have asked where we’ve gone. But we’ve been right here the whole time. We proudly present to you His Majesty, Prince of Spain.”

I found this album to be youthful and worldly at the same time with a natural and refreshing vibe.  Having listened to His Majesty in its entirety, I can easily say that this album is a perfect addition to an already amazing month of new music.  Do yourself a favor and drop a couple of bucks on His Majesty.  By doing this, not only are you supporting a wickedly talented local band, but you’re scoring some pretty awesome tracks to help transition your playlists into the fall season.

Originating from Ballarat in regional Victoria, Australia, Gareth Harrison and Guy Chappell are self-described as two “super rad DJs,” who make up the increasingly popular mashup group Yacht Club DJs.  Harrison and Chappell have quickly grown into one of Australia’s foremost mashup acts.  Despite having come from “humble beginnings,” according to the Gentlemen of the Road Stopover tour site, the Yacht Club DJs are insanely gifted in their ability to blend such diverse tracks into mixes that “create an epic party atmosphere and cause their audiences to sing at the top of their lungs.”

What could arguably be one of the best things about the mashups Gareth and Guy create is the variety of tracks they choose to use in their mixes.  In “Find Me A Macchiato Pronto,” the pair somehow are able to easily transition from songs that are complete opposites, and by doing so, successfully blend a myriad of genres together that you would never imagine fitting together so seamlessly.  From rap to pop, to country, even rock and classical, Yacht Club DJs hold no bias over the genres they use; they cover it all.

When asked by Aphra Magazine about their mix “They Mostly Come At Night…Mostly,” which is made up of over 500 samples, the pair stated, “I don’t think we’ve ever gone about it the same way twice. I sort of just let the music tell me what to do. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. I don’t really believe in having a strict process for Yacht Club anyway. It’d make the work boring and predictable.”

I can without a doubt say that thus far, the mashups I’ve heard from Yacht Club DJs are anything but boring and predictable.  The mixes these guys make are unique, high energy, and packed full of personality. Don’t miss your chance to see them live, tonight at the Communion show at Mercy Lounge and The High Watt, alongside the multiple talented acts we have been featuring for the past week, right here at causeascenemusic.com.

Shonna Tucker, former member of the alternative country/southern rock band Drive-By Truckers, is making waves of her own in the southern rock music scene with her new band, Shonna Tucker and Eye Candy.  Originally from Muscle Shoals, Alabama, home to the famous Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, Tucker grew up listening to music like that of Dolly Parton and Otis Redding. Self-described as a soulful country artist, Tucker writes in a way that she calls natural. “I started writing immediately after I left the Truckers,” Tucker says, in spite of not having a particular project or band in mind. “It all happened really fast.” Shortly after, Tucker was able to call on some friends to put her musical vision in motion. One of these friends, who fans of Drive-By Truckers will recognize, is long time bandmate John Neff.  As a part of Eye Candy, Neff lends his multi-instrumentalist abilities by way of the guitar and pedal steel.  Add Neil Golden on keyboards, Bo Bedingfield on guitar, and Clay Leverett on drums and you get a group that is not only teeming with talent but one that also offers a fresh new sound in the southern rock genre. Despite still falling into this genre, Shonna Tucker and Eye Candy is not much like the particularly guitar-heavy sound of the Truckers. Shonna Tucker and Eye Candy’s debut album A Tell All, according to the band’s official website, features “ten songs about love and jealously, nights spent on the road and nights spent in the kitchen, the things men do to women and women do for men.”

The band’s single “Since Jimmy Came,” which is available for download here, is just one of the many genuinely honest and relatable songs that will be offered on the debut album “A Tell All,” which is set for release on October 15th of this year.

A tip from us here at Cause A Scene… Buy your ticket early for the Return of Communion show for a taste of what this band has to offer. Trust us when we say you’re going to want to be able to say, “I knew them when…”
