Cool evening temperatures remind us that fall has arrived, but this past weekend, Nashville caught the fever… Fever Fever that is. As my first article for Cause A Scene, I had the privilege of choosing any band to write about for one of their Daily Discovery pieces.  Since I had been listening to Ohio-based Fever Fever for awhile, I knew that they were the group I wanted to showcase.  This past weekend, I was given another amazing opportunity to see this band perform at Exit/In as a part of a Slospeak Records show. If that wasn’t enough by itself, I was also invited to a secret house show.

In my earlier article, I compared Fever Fever to bands like Young the Giant and Local Natives.  After seeing them perform, I feel the need to throw all of my previously made comparisons out the window, simply because they aren’t like anyone else I’ve seen. The guys in Fever Fever played a really phenomenal set, complete with a harmonium, a flute, and a sweet lights show.  The downloads I’ve been listening to for so long don’t do this band justice by themselves.

If you’re looking for a new favorite, you should definitely give this band a listen.  You will seriously not be disappointed.

Super-group alert! If you have never heard of Salvador Dali Parton, I’ll cut you some slack considering the band only came together a week ago, but they’re one group you’re going to want to know about.  Made up of Mumford and Sons’ Winston Marshall, Old Crow Medicine Show’s Gil Landry,  Jake Orrall of Jeff the Brotherhood, Mike Harris of Apache Relay, and fronted by Justin Hayward-Young of The Vaccines, Salvador Dali Parton’s existence in the music world was short-lived but oh so sweet.  After a 20-minute songwriting session, one day of practice, a fair amount of whiskey, and a night of six shows, Salvador Dali Parton disbanded early Sunday morning.

Considering the collection of artists who made up this group, no one could have predicted that they’d deliver a mix of emo punk and doom metal, made even better by Marshall’s appearance in a dress, fishnet stockings, a fur coat, and a platinum blonde wig to complete the bizarre look.  As soon as the show began, a robed Hayward-Young turned into a man on a mission: to deliver as many death stares and theatrically foreboding hand gestures as possible.  Their set-list consisted of mostly impromptu instrumentals but with only one practice session together, they managed to pull off a very entertaining show.  Much to my and the rest of the audience’s enjoyment, Marshall and Hayward-Young were both very involved with the audience throughout the show I attended at the Exit/In.  At one point, a slightly inebriated Marshall invited an audience member on stage for a slow dance.

Despite having lasted just a little over half an hour, I can easily say that Salvador Dali Parton delivered one of the most entertaining and memorable shows I’ve seen.  Even after seeing them perform, I’m not entirely sure what their sound is; I only know that it’s a good one.

Happy Halloween!!

Cause A Scene —  October 31, 2013 — Leave a comment

Today, we at CAS would like to celebrate All Hallows Eve with a little homegrown Music City fun, brought to you by Count Drizzle. The Count is the alter ego of Nashville business owner, Matt Eddmenson, who has donned his cape and fangs the past several Octobers to raise Hell and drop fat beats.

Co owner alongside his wife Carrie, of the custom denim company Imogene + Willie, Eddmenson and company have developed a reputation across the Southeast and beyond of being purveyors of artisan craft, making a product that proudly represents the artistic spirit and southern heritage. It is a reputation that extends far beyond their professional abilities as they have often opened up their retail space to provide a creative stage to local artists and musicians, which gets them ‘thumbs up’ in our book. So here’s to killer threads and a howlin’ Halloween! Take it away Drizz…

The Rickshaw Roadshow is a five-piece outfit from the Johnson City, Tennessee area.  The band employs the use of wide range of instruments to create a folksy rock and roll sound with a hint of blues.  The perfect musical lovechild of The Avett Brothers and The Black Keys, The Rickshaw Roadshow is not just your run of the mill garage band; these guys are serious about their craft and have been building their own unique sound for years..  With no member tied down to exclusively play any one instrument, the amount of instrument swapping that occurs during each show is more than enough to keep the audience engrossed in the performance.  Having delved into music at relatively young ages, each of the five members of The Rickshaw Roadshow uses their musical and lyrical experience to craft unique, original tracks that are easy to appreciate.

The band’s debut album was released in February of this year.  Two new members have been added since the album hit the streets.  Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Austin Barrett shared that the band has “a slew of new songs” and that their sound has become “much more complex but has solidified at the same time”.  Barrett also offered, “We like to think of our first CD as a collective of ideas of all of our writing styles. As we all spend more time together and collect more experiences, however, we start to come up with exactly the same ideas”.

The Rickshaw Roadshow is in the studio right now tracking for their second album.  Barrett says the band is “very excited for where the sound is going.”  I’m sure the fans are just as anxious to get their hands and ears on those new tracks too.

CAS October 26 - Amy Stroup

This Saturday night Cause A Scene is bringing another stellar lineup of up and coming talent to Edgehill Cafe. Fronting the evening’s set, which is sure to fill the night with clap inducing rhythms and ear-tingling melodies, is Amy Stroup. Developing her talents from a tender age, Stroup has been molding a musical identity that is only beginning to truly take shape. Born in Boston and raised in Texas, Stroup has always been drawn to music, a draw that ultimately landed her in Nashville, where she studied classical guitar and marketing at Lipscomb University.

In the years that have followed she has kept diligent focus on her work and has not let up for a second. In that time Amy has released multiple digital-only EPs, had her songs featured on more than 20 TV show and multiple TV ads, been named one of Prairie Home Companion’s “Top 20 Songwriters Under 30” and won a national Peacemaker Award. 2011 marked the national release of her full-length effort, The Other Side of Love Sessions, a compilation of new recordings of her best songs from her digital EPs. In 2012 She teamed up with singer songwriter Trent Dabbs to form Sugar & the Hi-Lows. Their self-titled album received high praise from both fans and critics and allowed Stoup to explore new territory in her vocal abilities. As of late, Amy has been hard at work in Nashville on new material, the product of which is her new single ‘Falling” that released just last month.

This evening of music will also feature sets from three other Nashville pop-folk acts. The Inlaws is a new collaborative project from Caleb and Will Chapman of the local band CALEB, and Will’s wife, Jillian Edwards. Buster is comprised of musicians Pheobe Bridgers from LA, Harrison Whitford from here in Nashville and Jackson White. The band has been touring the country between the west coast and here in the Southeast and was recently featured on the Billy Block Show this past summer. Tender Gentleman is a local band formed out of Belmont University. Formerly know as Authors, Tender Gentleman has been rapidly spreading their music and building their name throughout Nashville. The band recently played at 12th and Porter with rising folk act Judah and the Lion.

We at CAS hope you are as excited as we are to see and hear these talented acts tear it up at Edgehill Cafe, located at 1201 Villa Place this weekend. General admission tickets will be available for $10 and VIP for $25. VIP tickets include a 3-course dinner (see menu below), beverage and preferred seating. This place fills up quick, so get your tickets ahead of time here and ensure that you don’t miss out on this unique evening of entertainment in Nashville. Doors will open at 7:00 PM with music soon to follow.
