Communion Club Night returns to Mercy Lounge tomorrow (Thursday), May 15th. This month, enjoy the breadth of styles from eight bands hitting their touring stride. The camaraderie will be palpable with our first three bands deep into a dozen dates together, and the others routing through spirited road calendars of their own. As per usual, doors open at 7:00 PM and music will begin promptly at 8:00 PM. Get your tickets here for $9.50 in advance or $15 DOS.

Here’s the rundown: Neulore comes out strong, boasting muscular, modern folk with expansive and cinematic peaks. The Nashville natives scored a deal with the music supervision titan Alexandra Patsavas’ Chop Shop Records (Twilight, Grey’s Anatomy) earlier this year, but haven’t forgotten their roots.

Pulling themselves up to rarified radio air, Bootstraps create polished, ethereal anthems centered on Jordan Beckett’s raspy vocal. The band’s larger-than-life sonic is enveloping, emotive, and sure to stun the live setting.

Los Angeles’ Busy Living brings a unique energy to the bill with effortless harmony surrounded by pop quirk. The quintet recently beefed up their sound with the help of Spoon’s Jim Eno, who produced two tracks (that we know about) at his Public Hi-Fi studios in Austin.

A familiar friendly face on the Nashville scene, Courtney Jaye’s latest set of breezy, classic country-tinged tunes made American Songwriter’s Top 50 Albums of 2013. NPR’s Ann Powers crowned her Dusty Springfield’s spiritual daughter. Somebody buy a round of box wine.

Landing somewhere between The Donnas and Grace Potter, Oregon native Cooper surrounds herself with an entourage of singers, dancers, and horns to become Cooper and the Jam. The fiery redhead brings blues, burlesque, and bravado to her latest Motown Suite.

Shifting gears, we ease in to the haunting, ethereal ballads of Penny & Sparrow. Expect a big year from the Texas duo, whose super-glued vocal layering a la Civil Wars and Swell Season has landed them on major festivals and the Billboard Heatseekers chart.

Kansas City smart-rockers Me Like Bees specialize in angular riffs and intricate rhythms with mechanical precision. With a nod to Modest Mouse, MLB have invented an equally fresh recipe for alternative music that sticks to your ribs.

We arrive at last to Daniel and the Lion, who have been making warm folk pop from Baraboo, Wisconsin for years, but broke nationally with YouTube covers. Just last month, they were asking fans on Facebook to help book shows, and in June they will open twenty-three dates for Counting Crows. It will be a treat to see these shining examples of persistence and humility under their own white-hot spotlight.

vandeveer

Don’t miss your chance this Tuesday, May 13th to catch D.C.-based folk act Vandaveer with local singer songwriter Jake McMullen in the 12 South area of Nashville. As we inch closer and closer to summer, this fantastic alt-folk lineup is sure to help welcome the longer days. This acoustic show is the latest installment of our ever-growing series of secret house shows with Closeup.fm that provide intimate settings to experience your favorite musicians like never before.

From the mind of Ohio born and Kentucky raised alt-folk musician Mark Charles Heidinger, Vandaveer is a project that has changed and morphed continuously through the course of four full-length albums and one EP since it’s conception in 2007, the most recent of which, Oh, Willie, Please… released just last year. In that time, Vandaveer has carved the niche in the folk scene with an Americana sound that intricately weaves haunting themes and tones with infectious and inviting melodies. Collaborating musicians often change from tour-to-tour and album-to-album, but harmonious songstress Rose Guerin has the most prominent. Vandaveer has received glowing press from the likes of The Washington Post, La Blogotheque, Daytrotter, and Consequence of Sound.

Jake McMullen’s masterfully ability to blur the lines between indie rock and country/folk will serve as the perfect compliment to Vandaveer this Tuesday evening. Former frontman for the band York, the Orange County, CA native, now Nashville transplant has spent the last few years focusing on his solo material, and I for one can’t knock the decision. In the time since he has continued writing his own material while also collaborating on a split EP with friend and Boston native Ellex Bree, aptly titled Ellex Bree + Jake that released in 2013. Since his first EP release in 2010, when he was still a teenager, McMullen has successfully crafted a sound that wonderfully displays his expert musicianship and talent as a songwriter.

Don’t miss out on what is sure to be a unique acoustic showcase of some of the best talent in folk music, in the most intimate of settings. Space is very limited with only a select number of tickets available, so get your tickets here for only $10. Secret 12 South location will be disclosed following purchase. Music will begin promptly at 8:00 PM. Doors open at 7:30 PM.

herzig

We at Cause A Scene are beyond pumped to present Katie Herzig as she celebrates the official release of her brand new record Walk Through Walls only two weeks from today, on April 25th at Mercy Lounge. Walk Through Walls, released earlier this week, is the highly anticipated follow-up to Herzig’s 2011 album, The Waking Sleep. While Herzig has been writing and recording music for over a decade, the critical and commercial success of The Waking Sleep kept her busy over the last three years. Along with a continually and rapidly growing international fan base and multiple tours, the bar was set very high when she began recording the material that would be stitched together to produce Walk Through Walls, but the result is nothing short of impressive and utterly satisfying. With a dream-like quality that pulses through all 12 tracks like a racing heart pumping blood to various extremities, ‘Walls’ retains the indie pop spirit and catchy melodies that has become signature of Herzig. If that isn’t enough, she has also toured with the likes of Ingrid Michaelson, Brandi Carlile, The Fray and Sarah Bareilles, and has multiple festivals through the years, yielding one badass resume.

Also playing on April 25th will be Amy Stroup, whom we also had the immense honor of presenting the release show for her new album, Tunnels, at Mercy Lounge less than two months ago. A strong reaction from Tunnels and the recognition of being named a Garrison Keilor’s Prairie Home Companion “Top 20 Songwriter Under 30” solidify Stroup as the perfect compliment to Herzig, culminating in a rare duo of powerhouse indie pop songstresses that are sure knock the doors off the Mercy.

Britpop-rock duo Lovers Electric will be opening up the show. Comprised of Eden Boucher and David Turley, this London based band has garnered critical acclaim both across the pond as well as in the States with their debut EP, Waiting For Something to Happen, which released last year. Lovers Electric is currently putting the finishing touches on their forthcoming full-length album.

Go ahead mark your calendars for April 25th, and don’t miss out on a night that is sure to be nothing short of epic, with a lineup stacked with some of music’s most promising talent. Get your tickets early here, because this one will be packed out! GA tickets are $15; seats are $20. Show starts at 8:00 PM. Doors at 7:00 PM.

communion 4.10

If you are looking for a way to hear some of the best up and coming artists, then you’re gonna want to get your ass down to Mercy Lounge this Thursday for this month’s Communion Nashville Club Night. Communion is a monthly showcase that spotlights a schmorgesborg of artists and bands on the cusp of hitting it big. Helmed and curated by Ben Lovett of Mumford and Sons, Communion’s ongoing mission is to share the world’s most promising new talent in intimate live settings. This month’s Club Night will feature performances from Johnny Stimson, The Shadowboxers, Sturgill Simpson, Cardboard Kids, Lenachka, Great Peacock and Christian Lee Hutson.

With a sound that draws similarities to a wide range of artists such as Frank Ocean, Michael Jackson, Prince and The Strokes, Johnny Stimson blends synth beats and crooning melodies to forge his own identity within pop music. In just the past year alone, the 24-year-old has garnered attention from the likes of Grammy.com, MTV Buzzworthy, Pop Justice and Nylon Magazine.

The Shadowboxers are a pop/rock trio from Atlanta, GA who are quickly gaining traction with a rapidly growing fan base. The band’s tight harmonies, soulful vocals and their knack for seamlessly crossing genres has even caught the attention of Justin Timberlake. See their cover of the current king of pop’s song “Pusher Love Girl,” that had him giving The Shadowboxers twitter kudos.

Jackson, KY-based singer songwriter Sturgill Simpson received critical acclaim with his debut record, High Top Mountain. Simpson’s country, blues and soul influences showcased on “High Top Mountain” yielded comparisons to Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard. Less than a year has passed since the release of his debut album and Sturgill is already promoting the upcoming release of his sophomore record, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music. Releasing the new album through his own label, High Top Mountain Records, Simpson describes it as containing a wholly unique sound from his first record.

The Cardboard Kids are a Nashville-based rock trio from Tyler, TX. Growing up together in Texas, the three friends formed Cardboard Kids in 2013 and have since released their debut full-length album, Echo Boomer, which dabbles in both rock and soul genres.

Thursday evening’s lineup will also feature three other Nashville based talents; indie/pop songstress Lenachka, folk/pop duo Great Peacock and Americana singer songwriter Christian Lee Hutson, all of whom have received critical acclaim and built strong fan bases far beyond the confines of music city.

Don’t miss out on what is sure to be another Communion home run and an evening full of fantastic music to boot. Get your tickets here for $9.50 in advance. Tickets will be $15 at the door. Music starts at 8:00 PM. Doors at 7:00 PM.

teitur

We at Cause A Scene are pumped to bring you a night full of great company and some of the best music this city has to offer, this Saturday night at The High Watt on Cannery Row. Headlining the evening’s bill is gifted and seasoned singer songwriter, Teitur (Tie-tor). Hailing from the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic, Teitur has spent the past decade honing his craft and playing his music for all to hear. Having left his homeland in the early 2000s to pursue his career and record his first album, Teitur returned home to record his sixth and most recent album, Story Music. Recorded in an old abandoned ice factory, Story Music echoes the spirit of the homeland he left so many years ago. With a strong following in the UK and an ever-growing fan base here in the States, we can’t be more excited to host Teitur on his stop through Nashville.

Filling out the night’s set are two Tennessee based bands, Grace and Tony from Lawrence County, TN and Nashville’s own Caleb Groh. Grace and Tony can best be described as a punkgrass couple band, and yes, their sound is as unique and interesting as their genre title. Grace and Tony White’s sound, a fusion of punk and bluegrass, was the lovechild of their budding romance and their passion to create has not yet ceased. Both musically influenced by their families, Grace by the gospel music and bluegrass of her childhood and Tony by his brother John Paul White of The Civil Wars. Both bring a passion and spirit to their music that sets them apart with every lyric and every note. The duo released their debut record November just last year.

Caleb Groh is a Nashville based folksinger songwriter and CAS alumnus who continues to wow us with every performance. Born in Connecticut and having spent his life up and down both coasts, Groh has been writing, recording and playing his own songs since he was a young teen. Spending his early years recording and playing with various projects, Caleb began writing and recording as a solo artist in 2011. In the time since he has grounded himself here in Nashville where he released his EP, Down Dakota!, and his full-length album, Bottomless Coffee, in 2013.

Come help us kick off the spring season this Saturday night with some great tunes! Get your tickets here for $10. Doors open at 7:00 PM. Music starts at 8:00 PM.
