david ramirez

Join us out at The High Watt this Saturday night as we begin our wrap up on 2013 as we enter our final stretch of shows this month, with two highly anticipated artists who we greatly admire here at Cause A Scene. Headlining the evening is CAS vet, David Ramirez, who played a sold out show to a packed house of eager listeners and music junkies back in February of this year.

Since an early age, Ramirez has himself in music. Inspired by the 90’s alt rock of his youth, later to derive artistic influence from the likes of Bob Dylan, Ryan Adam, The National and Arcade Fire, all of Ramirez’s musical influences have made their own personal mark on David as he has carefully cultivated his craft. Ramirez’s sound, an artful blend of traditional folk and contemporary indie-rock, bridges the generational gap, building himself a name and reputation that is rapidly spreading beyond his Southeast home base.

An Austin native, Ramirez has spent the last several years touring across the country and writing and recording 2 full-length albums and 3 EPs, building a devout loyal fan base. In 2012 he played over 175 shows, many of which were apart of his co-headline tour with fellow CAS alum, Noah Gundersen. 2012 continued to be a good year for David as his independently released full-length album, Apologies, debuted at #2 on iTunes Singer-Songwriter charts and #23 on Billboard Folk, and received praise from The New York Times, American Songwriter and PASTE. 2013 has proved to be just as successful year for Ramirez as 2012, with the release of his most recent EP, The Rooster, this past May. He is currently capping off the back on the road, and we are thrilled he chose to his Nashville stop a CAS show.

Opening for Ramirez, is a Nashville resident who embodies the image of what it means to be a strong woman in a modern world through her songs. Though she is only 22, Logan Brill demonstrates wisdom and poise in her songwriting that echos the soul of an artist far more seasoned. Her debut full-length album, Walking Wires, which released this year, is a true testament to what this young artist has planned for her listeners and herself as an artist. Brill is currently touring the north/south expanse of the east coast, her voice reaching more and more ears as she goes.

This Saturday is going to be a night full of the city’s best talent that you will not want to miss. The High Watt on Cannery Row is sure to fill up quickly to see these 2 spectacular talents, so secure your spot ahead of time and get your tickets here. Doors will open at 8:00 PM and the show will start at 9:00 PM.

CAS October 26 - Amy Stroup

This Saturday night Cause A Scene is bringing another stellar lineup of up and coming talent to Edgehill Cafe. Fronting the evening’s set, which is sure to fill the night with clap inducing rhythms and ear-tingling melodies, is Amy Stroup. Developing her talents from a tender age, Stroup has been molding a musical identity that is only beginning to truly take shape. Born in Boston and raised in Texas, Stroup has always been drawn to music, a draw that ultimately landed her in Nashville, where she studied classical guitar and marketing at Lipscomb University.

In the years that have followed she has kept diligent focus on her work and has not let up for a second. In that time Amy has released multiple digital-only EPs, had her songs featured on more than 20 TV show and multiple TV ads, been named one of Prairie Home Companion’s “Top 20 Songwriters Under 30” and won a national Peacemaker Award. 2011 marked the national release of her full-length effort, The Other Side of Love Sessions, a compilation of new recordings of her best songs from her digital EPs. In 2012 She teamed up with singer songwriter Trent Dabbs to form Sugar & the Hi-Lows. Their self-titled album received high praise from both fans and critics and allowed Stoup to explore new territory in her vocal abilities. As of late, Amy has been hard at work in Nashville on new material, the product of which is her new single ‘Falling” that released just last month.

This evening of music will also feature sets from three other Nashville pop-folk acts. The Inlaws is a new collaborative project from Caleb and Will Chapman of the local band CALEB, and Will’s wife, Jillian Edwards. Buster is comprised of musicians Pheobe Bridgers from LA, Harrison Whitford from here in Nashville and Jackson White. The band has been touring the country between the west coast and here in the Southeast and was recently featured on the Billy Block Show this past summer. Tender Gentleman is a local band formed out of Belmont University. Formerly know as Authors, Tender Gentleman has been rapidly spreading their music and building their name throughout Nashville. The band recently played at 12th and Porter with rising folk act Judah and the Lion.

We at CAS hope you are as excited as we are to see and hear these talented acts tear it up at Edgehill Cafe, located at 1201 Villa Place this weekend. General admission tickets will be available for $10 and VIP for $25. VIP tickets include a 3-course dinner (see menu below), beverage and preferred seating. This place fills up quick, so get your tickets ahead of time here and ensure that you don’t miss out on this unique evening of entertainment in Nashville. Doors will open at 7:00 PM with music soon to follow.

CAS October 17 - Friendly Savages

Strap yourself in for another night filled with fantastic music brought to you by Cause A Scene, this Thursday evening at The High Watt on Cannery Row. Leading the night’s stellar lineup is a band who is quickly making a name for themselves in a city that is wrought with a dense population of talent and sound. Based in Austin, TX, Friendly Savages has spent the two short years that they have been making music together constructing a sound that seamlessly blurs genre lines, mixing influences that pull from folk, rock, blues and even classical. Their full-length debut, O, Joshua!, released earlier this year, was a true testament to the bands reach as songwriters and performers, quickly climbing to #3 on the iTunes singer songwriter charts. Suffice it to say, we at CAS are excited to host these boys here in Nashville.

Filling out the night’s bill is another Austin, TX outfit Penny & Sparrow. Making their second Cause A Scene appearance, this talented duo has a reputation for blowing a CAS audience’s hair back. Former roommates Andy Baxter and Kyle Jahnke played their first Nashville house show in East Nashville a this past summer, and while it was only a few months ago it is easy to say that they could not have returned quick enough. Jahnke lays out simply orchestrated rhythms with a lone acoustic guitar providing the foundation for Baxter’s strong and haunting vocal melodies resulting in a distinctly original musical identity that draws influence from The Swell Season, Bon Iver, Mumford and Sons. Their 2013 full-length release, Tenboom, is a compilation of 10 tracks that displays a rawness and maturity that is truly refreshing in a scene that is often muddled with mediocrity.

Brooklyn-based Wilder Maker will also be sharing the stage. This band’s size (10 members to be exact) may lead one to assume that their sound is large and excessive, but it is in fact the contrary. Despite their numbers, Wilder Maker’s music is the sort of bare bones of Americana music that boasts raw and stripped down instrumentals and lyricism. The band released their second album, Year of Endless Light, just last month.

Topping off the evening will be Traveller, the new project of local singer songwriter Mikaela Hamilton. Traveller made their live Nashville debut back in July at a CAS house show. We are thrilled to have them back again, on a larger stage and playing alongside a group of immensely talented craftsmen. Traveller’s first single “Animal” is due to release via NoiseTrade later this week.

Don’t miss out on what is sure to be another raging CAS night at The High Watt, full of stellar talent and kick ass music. Get your tickets here for $10 in advance or $12 DOS. Doors open at 7:00 PM and the music starts at 8:00 PM.

CAS October 12 - Smooth Hound Smith

Join us this Saturday night for another evening of doing what we do best; bringing you another night full of up and coming talent and fresh original tunes. This weekend we return to Edgehill Cafe at 1201 Villa Place with a lineup of four incredibly talented acts from right here in good ol’ Music City. Anchoring the evening’s set is a duo that is on the fast track to success among the local music scene. Smooth Hound Smith is comprised of singer/multi-instrumentalist Zack Smith and vocalist/percussionist Catie Doyle. Together they fuse their talents utilizing kick drums, tambourines, wailing harmonicas and soaring harmonies to produce a sound that brings a contemporary flair to the familiar and nostalgic sounds of old school rock n’ roll, blues and soul.

The duo played their first gig together just more than a year ago in early 2012, and the electric chemistry between the two musicians was palpable and instantaneous. In the months since Smooth Hound Smith has set their pace at ‘full throttle’ and haven’t let up on the gas since. In the short period of time that they have been playing together, the duo has played nearly 200 shows, helmed a self-booked national tour that spanned seven weeks and covered over 8,500 miles, spreading their music across the country to all who care to listen. While traveling and playing nonstop, they also found time to write, record and release their debut full-length album. The self-titled effort was released earlier this year and consists of ten well-crafted songs that possess a timelessness that gives high hope to this band’s potential.

Also on the docket for the evening is Charlie and the Foxtrots, a six-piece band out of Georgia who have recently set up camp in Nashville. The six members of ‘Foxtrots’ hail from all across the Southeast, and each member brings his own set of talents to produce a sound that is rich mix of folk and pop. That sound is defined by a carefully orchestrated combination of guitars, banjos, mandolins, harmonica, slide guitars, trumpet and upright bass that leaves a lasting impression on the band’s listeners. Charlie and the Foxtrots’ recent EP, The Evergreen, was released earlier this year.

Fleshing out the night’s bill is two artists who are both originally from Texas. Red Bull Sound Select artist Ryan Culwell is a seasoned musician from the Texas panhandle who has recently brought his folk/Ameicana tunes to the fair city of Nashville. If his EP, Winter Wheat, which released earlier this year is any indication of what this musician’s future efforts are to bring, we for one are excited to see what Culwell has up his sleeve. Culwell is currently working on a full-length record that is due out in the coming months.

Singer-songwriter Jane Ellen Bryant currently splits her time between her hometown of Austin, TX and her current home here in Nashville where she moved in 2009 to study vocal performance at Belmont University. Bryant’s distinct and sultry melodies paired with her talents as a songwriter yield a sound that seamlessly blur the line between homegrown folk and southern rock paying equal homage to both the deep musical heritage of Music City and her Texas roots. In 2012 Bryant recorded and released her first full-length album and also appeared as an official SXSW artist. Jane Ellen Bryant is currently putting the finishing touches on her follow-up album, which she plans to release later this year.

Help us bring in the autumn season as we kick back with some righteous tunes and sip on tasty home-brewed coffee at Edgehill Cafe this Saturday. As with prior shows at Edgehill both general admission and VIP tickets will be available. VIP tickets include a three-course meal and beverage for you to enjoy whilst the performers give it their all. Space is limited, so be sure to get your tickets in advance here. Doors open 7:00 PM with the music soon to follow.

Communion US October 2013 10 TN

My story and the story of Cause A Scene over the last year and a half would be incomplete without telling the story of Communion Records. Founded several years ago by Ben Lovett of Mumford & Sons, Kevin Jones of Bear’s Den (if you don’t know that band, you will soon) and legendary producer Ian Grimble (Manic Street Preachers, Travis). With a track record of launching buzz worthy artists like Gotye, Ben Howard, Michael Kiwanuka, Daughter and The Staves into the music world, they’ve developed quite the track record for cultivating burgeoning talent around the globe.

It’s no wonder that with their folk beginnings in the UK that I was naturally drawn to them and their roster of artists. Somehow this record label just got me, and through their artists, their compilation albums and especially their monthly showcases in cities all over the world, they never let me down in allowing me the opportunity to discover phenomenal new musical talent. (See: Vance Joy, The Trouble With Templeton, Half Moon Run, etc.)

Flash back to a mere 18 months ago and here is the scene, one which, if you know me, you’ve likely heard some version of this story. It’s March 6, 2012, and I’m sitting along the stage just a handful of rows back for Mumford & Sons’ first-of-three sold out nights at the iconic Ryman Auditorium. The night will be forever remembered by many in attendance as the night Marcus got sick and had to leave the stage three quarters through the set. For me, however, the night will always be remembered as the night I said to myself: “I want to work with the bands that play on that stage. I am going to do music for the rest of my life.” At that point I had curated a grand total of two house shows and racked up maybe ten blog posts on artists, but I felt that the music world is where I was supposed to be. Thus Cause A Scene was formally born, based largely on the Communion model of finding developing talent before they become the “next big thing” and helping them get to that point.

Flash forward a year exactly, to March 6, 2013, and I am sitting in my boss’s office hearing him say these words: “There is an opportunity that I’d like to present you with if you’re interested. I understand Cause A Scene is growing and you’d like to spend more time focusing on that, but you should know that Ben Lovett and I have talked about you and Cause A Scene and he’s interested in bringing you on board with Communion in Nashville.” I was shocked. I was ecstatic. Most of all, I just felt blessed. Six months later I had the opportunity to actually meet one of my heroes at a Mumford & Sons show in Birmingham (pictured below). And that brings us to where we’re at now, with Communion’s relaunch in Nashville set to happen in a mere nine days on October 10 at Mercy Lounge and High Watt.

Larry and Ben Lovett

As the Nashville Scene said, Communion is “intended to profoundly alter the rhythm of a live show, giving it a more youthful and current feel by making it more, well, communal.” It’s been called by NME as “one of the greatest indie success stories of recent years.” Over the last year in Nashville, Communion has hosted some of the best new bands in the country, including Shovels & Rope, Michael Kiwanuka, Night Beds, Alanna Royale, St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Escondido, Holly Williams, John Fullbright and many more.

Next Thursday night, we (Communion) are pleased to be presenting Rubblebucket, Roadkill Ghost Choir, and Willy Mason, along with Yacht Club DJs, T. Hardy Morris, Cory Branan and Shonna Tucker & Eye Candy. The bands will be split between Mercy Lounge and High Watt with local artisans setting up pop-up stores in between. Our dear friends at Grimey’s, Nisolo, and Red Earth Trading Company will be joining us for the night to create a true community vibe.

Over the next several days, Cause A Scene will be highlighting each of the artists performing at the Communion relaunch, starting with Rubblebucket tomorrow. I hope you will take the time to check out each artist and join us next Thursday night for what promises to be a special night as we work to make the live music experience something even more special and community-oriented. Tickets for the show can be purchased HERE for $12 in advance and $15 the day of the show. More information can be found on the Mercy Lounge website, and to get a deeper sense of what Communion is all about, check out the video from our US launch last year below and the playlist of artists performing at next week’s show below.
