TONIGHT: Yards & Gardening, Not Architecture

Tonight we have the distinct privilege of presenting the tour kickoff for our friends Krist and Sarah in East Nashville for what will surely be the most ‘punk’ Cause A Scene show to date. We’ve been big fans of their music for some time now and can’t wait to see what they have in store for us tonight. Come out to The Owl Farm (811 Dickerson, Unit 1, Nashville, TN 37027) for the show. Music starts at 8:00. The show is free, but we encourage a $5-$10 donation to help the artists as they begin their tour. Hope to see you all there!

Krist (Yards) and Sarah (Gardening, Not Architecture) have been friends for over a decade, first working together to host and promote shows in Madison, WI. Over the years, they have collaborated as both entrepreneurs and musicians, working together through their organizations Self Group and Earn It Yourself, as well as touring together with their various musical projects.

In 2012, as the world is coming to an end, they have decided to reunite one last time to tour their old midwestern stomping grounds, and visit the east coast once more before the Apocalypse. Both strong proponents of the do-it-yourself philosophy, Krist and Sarah have decided to co-book the tour themselves, focusing on house shows and smaller, DIY spaces.

“A cauldron of methodical yet deeply moving instrumental rock that combines forlorn piano motifs with gradually intensifying, swirling drones and portentous orchestral swells.” writes the Seattle Stranger of the release that initially spurred Yards, Southerly’s “Champion of The Noisy Negativists”. Though not entirely instrumental, Yards directs its focus on a wider range of compositional concepts. Creating in one track what could be a dark contrasting club hit to a simplistic conceptual piece based on select subject matter.

Cause A Scene Proudly Presents: Elenowen w/ Seth Wood & Parke Avery

It’s called ‘chemistry’, an elusive quality that can be part history, part mystery and all intangible until the moment that you feel it. It’s a meant-to-be melding of the emotional and creative that can happen between songwriters, performers, best friends or life partners. For Josh and Nicole Johnson – the duo Elenowen – that connection is all of the above and much more. And on their self-titled EP, the chemistry they share is as rare – and real – as it gets.

Though emerging from the same Nashville-based Americana-folk scene as The Civil Wars, Elenowen deliver a sonic glow all their own. Amidst haunting harmonies and elegiac lyrics, their songs flow with an undercurrent of yearning, surrender and unexpectedly sharp edges. “We strive to maintain a certain vulnerability in our music,” Josh says. “We write a lot about our own lives as well as the truths about relationships that we relate to. We think it creates an intimacy that’s totally connected to the music.” The sound itself is roots-driven, with accents of cello and pedal steel cutting a deeply evocative facet. Even the name Elenowen is an authentic nod to heritage, with Ellen being Josh’s mom’s middle name and Owen being the middle name of Nicole’s dad. “They’re the sides of the family we each got our music from,” explains Josh. “What’s in our hearts will always come out in what we do.”
When we first started Cause A Scene, one of the artists we immediately said “Man, it would be amazing to get them” about was Elenowen. Josh and Nicole’s aforementioned chemistry and flawless harmonies had us wrapped around their fingers. When we unexpectedly witnessed them perform an impromptu acoustic set at Seth Wood’s Kickstarter party, our resolve to have them play in the living room was even further resolved. If you’ve somehow missed this couple’s gorgeous harmonies and heartfelt lyrics, it’s time to hop on the bandwagon. Don’t worry, there’s still plenty of room left for you to join. On December 7th, you’ll have your chance.

Seth headlined a Cause A Scene house show this past spring and captivated the audience with every note. He recently wrapped up a successful Kickstarter campaign and will be releasing his new EP in the coming months. We’re chomping at the bit He’s a phenomenal musician and an even better guy. We really couldn’t be more thrilled to have him on this bill.
 Parke Avery closed out the night of our very first Cause A Scene “Collective” show in late March of this year (that was only our 4th show ever – WOW how the time has flown by!). On that night following Parke’s spellbinding performance, we vowed to ourselves that we would have Parke back for another show, and we’re now doing our best to control our exuberance to have him on this bill. Expecting big things from this one!

Causing A Scene in Tuscaloosa, Alabama

Here at Cause A Scene, we put a high premium on loyalty and being good to those who have been so gracious to us over the last year. With that in mind, it’s no wonder that we are THRILLED to be presenting our first show outside the confines of our beloved Volunteer State and hosting our good friends Seryn and Julia Sinclair for a very special acoustic performance in a city that is dear to my (Larry’s) heart.

On Monday, November 12th, the Capstone will be buzzing with an intimate concert that is sure to be one of the musical highlights for the fall semester for college coeds and local Tuscaloosans alike. The last time Seryn came to town, the show sold out quickly, so be advised to reserve your spot well in advance. Tickets can be purchased via the link below.

It’s time for the rest of the Southeast to get an idea of the scene we’ve been privileged to be causing here in Music City. See you soon, Alabama.

Cause A Scene Proudly Presents: Matthew & The Atlas (Solo) and John Fullbright House Show

Matthew Hegarty aka Matthew & The Atlas takes a dreamy, textured take on Americana and filters it through his extraordinarily bruised and affecting voice. As a key member of the new folk scene emerging from London in the early part of this decade, he is a revered – almost cult – figure among his fellow artists, while continuing to fly beneath the mainstream radar.
Supported by a five-piece band, 2010/11 saw him release two acclaimed EPs on Communion Records (the young and influential indie label that has been home to Ben Howard, Daughter, Gotye, Michael Kiwanuka, Marcus Foster and others) and play to a steadily growing – and increasingly evangelical – live audience in the UK.
M&TA also toured the US twice in 2011 – once supporting Mumford & Sons and once on a headline run (including a sold out show at NYC’s Mercury Lounge), and in 2012 has toured the UK and Europe with Grammy winners The Civil Wars. M&TA’s much anticipated debut album is due in 2013.

John Fullbright is a young man who finds love, beauty and pain in the here and now, but skepticism and disdain for those that would look past the world or take advantage of the dreams of those hoping for a better world. That he can articulate his worldview with an almost otherworldly precocity makes his debut studio album From The Ground Up worthy of attention. From the fertile ground of Oklahoma, another songwriting legend may be blooming.

Cause A Scene Proudly Presents: Seryn & CALEB w/ Levi Weaver and Julia Sinclair

Today marks a very exciting moment in the history of Cause A Scene. We were graciously asked to present our first show outside the confines of a house in Nashville, and we could not be more thrilled with this show and the insanely talented lineup on board. Today also marks a jumping off point for Cause A Scene, as we are in the process of planning out a full-scale production company with the specific aim of promoting shows around Nashville with the best new talent that we can offer.

On the night of Saturday, November 17, at 12th & Porter, we will be hosting one of our all-time favorites, Seryn, fresh off their performance in front of 225+ people at our most recent house show and local legends CALEB who if you haven’t seen live, you’re severely missing out. It is very fitting to be hosting Seryn for this show, as they’re the band that really launched Cause A Scene in the first place. We couldn’t be happier to promote these wonderful folks. CALEB (Caleb and Will Chapman, Scott Mills) released the fantastic “To The Ends of the World” EP last fall and are poised to breakout in a huge way in the coming year. These guys might be young, but they possess the musical chops of artists twice their age.

As if that wasn’t enough musical goodness for you already, we’ll have the brilliant Levi Weaver and Julia Sinclair gracing the 12th & Porter stage as well. We had the chance to catch Levi close out the SofarSounds Nashville launch in early September are were left nearly speechless at the his sonically and stylistically rich songs that carried the weight and depth of an artist far beyond his years. And as for Julia? Well, we were lucky to have her open the Seryn house show and we could have listened to her play the rest of the night. A true gem of an artist.
